How to Choose Your Wedding Party

Your wedding party usually consists of your closest friends and family who will be there for you during your whole wedding process. So, it’s no surprise you may become overwhelmed with anxiety just thinking about who you should ask. You know you can’t include everyone you’d like to - and of course, you don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, so how do you choose the right group of people? Read below for some tips on how to lessen the stress of selecting your wedding party.

Don’t Ask Unless You Are Sure

To avoid hurting your friends and family’s feelings, don’t feel rushed to ask several people to be in your wedding party the moment you get engaged. Give yourself a little time to go over the options and then decide. Try selecting those you know have been in your life a long time and will still be in your life after the wedding. Can’t decide on particular friends or family? Think of how they would fit into the rest of your group, and if your answer is they wouldn’t, go with another option.

Think of the Roles You Need to Fill

A wedding is a massive production, which takes a small army to help complete. If you want individuals to be very involved in the wedding planning, choose those you know will help you take care of specific wedding tasks. Skip asking those you know who aren’t reliable or that live too far away. You’ll avoid facing disappointment when they can’t help you take care of the things you need to accomplish.

Consider the Size of Your Wedding Party

You can choose as many or as few bridesmaids and groomsmen as you want to have in your wedding party. For a smaller wedding, the average is four on each side, and for a larger wedding, you could go up to six on each side if you want. Just remember when you involve more people in the mix, it can complicate things. There will be more details to organize, increased costs, and schedule conflicts you’ll have to consider.

Don’t Worry About Being Equal

Having the same amount of bridesmaids and groomsmen may look great in pictures, or work better when walking down the aisle, but it’s not an absolute must. If you’re having trouble making it so that your wedding party is equal, don’t worry about it. There isn’t any reason why you should add someone you don’t know that well, or care much about, just to keep things balanced.

Don’t Feel the Need to Return the Favor

Weddings shouldn’t be tit for tat. Just because someone you worked with seven years ago asked you to be in their wedding, doesn’t mean that you have to ask them to be in yours. If a person asks why they weren’t chosen to be a part of your crew, just explain that it was a hard decision and although they mean a lot to you; you had to pick the people closest to you.

Feel Free to Switch Things up a Bit

If the bride-to-be has a best guy friend since the second grade, there’s no reason why she can’t include him into her wedding party. The same thing goes for the groom. There’s no law that says you have to have certain people on each side based on their gender. When it comes to what they will wear, you can have the men match the groomsmen, or wear a suit that matches the color of the bridesmaid’s dresses. For the women, keep them in dresses or have them where a feminine tuxedo. The choice is yours!

Keep Things Fair

It’s your wedding day, and you should pick the wedding party you want, but if your choices are going to cause drama within your family, reconsider them. If you have multiple siblings, don’t choose one and overlook the others. If you know you can’t rely on some of your family members to help you with pre-wedding planning, assign them a particular role during the wedding instead, such as reading a special poem.

There really is no right or wrong answer when choosing who will be a part of your wedding party (although the ones you don’t ask may feel differently). Follow your gut instinct and remember that this is your day (along with your husband or wife to be) and that eventually, people will understand that you had to make tough choices.
